I haven't been doing much recently, so any job that my agency offers I do. I've photographed a few acts at G-A-Y in London. It's a new venue which moved sometime towards the end of 2008. In the new venue you can't hang around back stage, which mean you have to wait in a room with all the club goers, normally very loud music, hot and sweaty. Not great. Last time I was there I photographed Lily Allen which was great, getting to see her live and up close. This occasion was a duo called Booty Luv, not so sure I was over keen on their music, I've heard worse. They went down really well as their music was well suited to a night club atmosphere. Available light was very poor, it never is great a live show, here, they don't object to camera flash. This shot was with no flash. With such slow shutter speeds, you get blur from the movement of the people in the shot. Walking about taking general landscape shots its quite acceptable to keep the shutter speed above the focal length. When shooting moving objects such as people, this method doesn't work quite so well. Shots with flash kill and atmosphere from the night, but will still appeal to news and magazine media, plus you can use faster shutter speeds and freeze the action for a clear shot. Tech Info: ISO 1000, lens 17-40mm, 1/60 @ 23mm

A head shot from a recent shot at Adrian Pini studio with Glamour model Jodie Gasson. I hope to have the main sets from this shoot available in a few weeks. Other commitments restrict my time at the moment. Tried to keep the lighting very simple for this, one main light infront and above the model. Minimal processing on this shot, just some curve adjustments to increase contrast in selected areas. Click to mail me My website

I've done a few photoshoots with Gemma now. All previous one have been in the studio, I was keen to do some location work as I haven't done any for quite some time (years). After being in the studio it was completely different. The model felt a bit more conscious that the general public could see what was going on. I had an idea I wanted to try for this part of the shoot. I wanted to have a strong backlit scene and light Gemma from the front. Although this shot is lit well, I didn't quite get the look I was after, as I wanted the slight flare from the backlit scene in the shoot. I either got it like this, or totally flared and unusable. A recent trip around Kent with a photographer friend took me to two disused but kept churches. You can almost do what you want in them, with in reason as they are still consecrated. This shot will eventually go to E&E picture library, once I've got enough files to make a reasonable submission. If your are interested in photographing Churches, have a look at www.visitchurches.org.uk it has a list a details of similar Churches in your area (UK). Tech-Info:- 24-70 lens at 24mm, tripod, 2 sec at f16. Processing, masks, curves and lens correction in photoshop. Subscribe to RSS headline updates from: Powered by FeedBurner

This shot was take at a local studio group shoot event. I'm not a fan of group shoot at studios for a few reasons:- Other photographers will have similar pictures The clothes will be the same, sets will be the same and similar poses Your can keep them exclusive as you have no idea what the other photographers will do with their pictures If you do have an idea, the next photographer may get the model to do a similar thing The lighting set up will be the same for everyone I'm sure there are many more reasons This shoot was a little bit different, I'd seen the model previously (not in person) and was keen to do a shoot with her. The studio had a new set I was keen to see. Finely you, do get some new pictures for your portfolio. Also unless the other photographers get a signed model release, they can't really do that much commercially with the pictures. The main shoot with this group shot was a new victorian bath set. I'm keeping these shots until they are all processed, I'll also be sending them out to a few magazines/agencies that I use first. This means I may not post the shots until they are published. Here is one from a bed set (which I'm not sending off) while we were waiting for the bath to fill with water. The model is Charley . She was very good and I'd recommend her to anyone wishing to build their portfolio. Tech-info:- Canon 1d mk111, 24-70, f5.6 1/125 ISO 100. 1 soft box camera left. Click to mail me My website

One stock picture library I use, constantly requests pictures of people smiling. It's quite easy to get moody, thoughtful, or sad emotions in photos. However, to get a good natural smiling happy shot, is not easy. What may work for one person doesn't work for another. I think with this shot, I almost insulted the models choice of clothes, which she found quite amuzing, another, perhaps not so. I also prefer shots with good eye contact, mainly because with my work as a press photographer, it will help you sell more pictures. So I struggle to get non-eye contact images that I like. This shot however, I like. On another note, I've started a blog over on blogger/blogspot, which is great, and some people that I follow on shutterchance have found me and left comments. While I like blogger, I notice that replying to a comment isn't the same as shutterchance and it may appear rude if people think I'm ignoring them. I'm not! I like all constructive comments, even thought I may not like it, negative comments are welcome, someone may spot something or make a suggestion I'd not thought of. Click to mail me My website

I visited Brighton with photographer Nigel Wheal hoping to get some landscape/seascape shots at sunset. Sadly, despite the rain which stopped, it remained overcast for most of our visit. Further west along the beach was a jetty, with the tide just reaching it's peak and the dull overcast day some long exposure shots were the order of the day here. Using a cokin ND filter with a lee filters attachment I added an extra 3 stops to get exposures of 2-3 seconds. I just managed to stop my feet getting wet as a big wave came over the jetty. Luckily for me, I'd just managed the exposure I wanted on this shot. Click to mail me My website I have also recently started a new blog, which you can access by clicking the link below. This allows slightly more flexibility than I get with shutterchance. I will still continue to use shutterchance, mainly to view my listed buddies.

For this venture I wanted to get a picture of some wooden lighthouses on the beach at Dovercourt, Essex (nr Harwich, UK) the best time of the day to get them is in the morning when the sun rises. Currently this is just before 6am. While I was looking at the lighthouses, waiting for the golden glow of the sun to bathe them in light, I turned to the direction of the sun and saw this view here. This has just had basic adjustments in Aperture, which means no in depth photoshop. These colours are as it was seen. Perhaps if your usually up early (unlike myself) you'd know what I mean. Was it worth getting up early for. I think so. Click to mail me

			<![CDATA[
This is a shot of Matthew Horne, an English actor/comedian. This was taken the day after he presented the Brit Awards in London. I was supposed to photograph some of the brits as a press photographer, unfortunately I had other plans. So the following day I went to the theatre where this Matthew was performing. I didn't expect the shot to anything other than a day shot of the star walking and possible future stock use for the agency. When Matthew saw me he covered his face as if 'Not another photographer', unfortunately for him, it looked like to much partying the night before had caught up with him. I'm not even sure he attended any of the after show parties. This shot was used in the Sun, and Daily Record. Great, makes up for not going out the day before. A month later Mat passes out on stage, this picture was used again, this time in the Daily Mirror and some of the weekly magazine to accompany stories on Mat working to hard. Since writing this post and scheduling it for blog publication, I've had yet more pictures from this set published in The News of The World, this time on an article about a female stalking Mat. I must also mention, I set out to photograph actress Sadie Frost on this day as she was also performing at the same theatre. I never took her picture. Was he really tired here, or did I catch him at the wrong moment. I think the later. He wasn't pleased I took his picture, and I do feel bad that the picture sold with the stories it accompanied. Picture was sold through one of my press agencies ISO Images I've also recently started a new blog, which is more how I'd like my blog to be. See it here Check out my Alamy Stock - Well only a few images online so far. Stock photography by Nathan Hulse at Alamy

I've not been doing much creative photography recently. However I managed to get out the other week with some friends of Talk Photography. Just as the sun was setting we stopped the car, jumped over a fence and took a few shots. Heres one of them. I've also recently got accepted by alamy (first attempt), so I'm please about that at the moment. I'll be interested to see how that goes. I've also had a picture taken back in February used in the national press and mags, which I'll talk about in a future post.
